ECEAE welcomes announcement of Animal Testing Directive Rapporteur

The ECEAE welcomes the announcement that Neil Parish MEP will be leading the European Commission’s review of Directive 86/609/EEC on the protection of animals used in experiments.

12 million animals are currently used in experiments throughout Europe each year. 93% of EU citizens believe more needs to be done to improve the level of welfare/protection of animals used in experiments, by action at EU level [1].

The revision of the Directive is an historic opportunity for the EU to make a real difference to animal protection and in the process. The ECEAE is disappointed with the lack of ambition of the Commission in its proposals but hopes that the revision reflects the clearly-expressed views of EU citizens.

Michelle Thew, Chief Executive of the ECEAE said “We are delighted that Neil Parish has been given this role. He has a strong record in animal protection issues and the ECEAE looks forward to working closely with him to ensure our concerns are addressed.”

ECEAE welcomes validation of two more methods to replace Draize skin irritation test

The European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE) welcomes the announcement that the Modified EpiDerm Skin Irritation Test and the SkinEthic RHE skin irritation test have been endorsed by the ECVAM Scientific Advisory Committee as a scientifically valid method to test for skin irritancy. Both tests are now full validated and form an addition to EpiSkin as complete replacements to the notorious Draize skin irritation test.

Mehr als 2,6 Millionen Tiere wurden im Jahr 2007 in Deutschland für Tierversuche verwendet, etwa 100.000 mehr als im Vorjahr. Damit erreichen die heute vom Bundesministerium für Ernährung, Landwirtschaft und Verbraucherschutz herausgegebenen Statistiken einen Wert wie vor 20 Jahren. Für die Ärzte gegen Tierversuche ist dies ein "skandalöser Rückschritt".

Erneut Negativrekord bei der Verwendung von Versuchstieren - Deutscher Tierschutzbund fordert Stopp der Tierqual

Nach der alljährlich vom Bundesministerium für Ernährung, Landwirtschaft und Verbraucherschutz veröffentlichten Statistik ist die Zahl der genutzten Versuchstiere erneut angestiegen: 2007 mussten rund 100.000 mehr Tiere in deutschen Labors leiden und
sterben als im Vorjahr. Insgesamt wurden 2.609.483 Wirbeltiere zu Versuchszwecken genutzt. „Trotz Versprechungen der Bundesregierung und eines parteiübergreifenden Konsens, dass die Zahl der verwendeten Versuchstiere reduziert werden müssen, weist der Bericht erneut einen Anstieg der Tierversuche aus. Die Bundesregierung hat damit zum wiederholten Male das Ziel verfehlt, die Zahl der Tierversuche zu verringern“, stellt Brigitte Rusche,
Vizepräsidentin des Deutschen Tierschutzbundes und Leiterin der Akademie für Tierschutz in Neubiberg, fest.

Tierversuche: EU legt neue Richtlinie vor Ärzteverband fordert Ausstieg aus dem Tierversuch

Die EU-Kommission hat nun den seit langem erwarteten Richtlinienentwurf zum Schutz der EU-weit jährlich 12 Millionen Versuchstiere vorgelegt. Die bisherige, mit 22 Jahren stark veraltete Regelung soll damit abgelöst werden. Der bundesweite Verband Ärzte gegen Tierversuche wirft Brüssel vor, Tierversuche lediglich besser verwalten zu wollen, als den Anfang vom Ende des Tierversuchs einzuleiten.

Almost double the official number of animals could be involved in UK tests

An estimated 115 million animals are used in laboratory experiments around the world each year, according to the first ever statistical analysis of global animal testing published this week in the journal ATLA [1].
